OREM, Utah - Seattle University women’s soccer closed the regular season with a 2-0 win at Utah Valley Saturday night. Leahi Manthei scored twice as the Redhawks clinched the second seed and a first-round bye in next week’s WAC Tournament.
“We knew the second seed was on the line tonight and we put together a great team effort,” said Coach Julie Woodward. “This is a tough place to play and we got a great performance from Hula (Manthei). Also, our defense has been playing well.”
SU (8-7-3, 6-1-1 WAC) was the better side in the first half, dominating possession and putting the Wolverines on their heels for much of the 45 minutes. In the 23rd minute, Holly Rothering stole the ball and passed ahead to Jessie Ray near the top of the 18-yard marker. Ray calmly dished to her left to a streaking Manthei, who hammered a one-touch shot into the upper right corner for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the hosts were more competitive, but Ariana Romero and the Redhawk back line stood tall to keep the Wolverines off the board.
Seattle U built several strong chances and then finally iced the match in the 84th minute. Romero booted a ball over the top that came down at the feet of Sebelle Rojas. Rojas sent a flick ahead to a hustling Manthei, who worked around the goalkeeper and scored to collect a brace.
Romero made two saves for her fourth shutout in conference play. SU has allowed just one goal in its last 444:38 of game action, spanning October.
More details on the WAC Tournament will be available on Sunday. SU will face the winner of Wednesday’s contest between UTRGV and CSU Bakersfield on Friday afternoon at Utah Valley.
