SPOKANE, WASH. – Seattle U women’s tennis headed to Spokane, Wash., over the weekend to participate in Gonzaga University’s Bulldog Invite, hosted at The Stevens Center. From Oct. 5-7, the Redhawks competed against players from Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State, and Washington.
In the White Singles Flight, sophomore Kyra Jung made it to the semifinals before falling to Idaho’s Shion Watabe 7-6, 1-6, 10-2; she was then forced to withdraw due to a lingering shoulder injury. Freshman Jillian Rasmussen also reached the semifinals, losing to Montana’s Bianca Bostrom 7-5, 6-2 and taking third place by default due to Jung’s withdrawal.
The Zag Singles Flight saw junior Kali McCollister also reaching the semifinals before falling to Montana State’s Annie Walker 6-3, 6-2. Freshmen Aranza Sanabria and Martina Asciuto both made it to the quarterfinals before losing to Walker (6-1, 6-1) and Montana State’s Linnea Fristam (6-2, 6-1), respectively, while freshman Hannah Grossman lost to Gonzaga’s Katie Day 5-7, 6-0, 10-3 in the round of 16. The consolation brackets for the Zags flight were not completed in order to avoid two teammates facing each other, as Grossman and Asciuto both reached the finals match, with Asciuto defeating Montana State’s Linda Vink 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 in her previous match.
In the Bulldog Singles Flight, the Redhawks impressed, with sophomore Hannah Gianan winning the entire bracket by defeating Montana State’s Sara Iverson 6-3, 6-1, 7-5. Freshman Alisa Sabotic lost to Gianan in the semifinals 6-4, 6-1, while senior Lily-Ana Kreutzer fell to Iverson 6-1, 6-3 in the other semifinal match.
Doubles play was spread out over two draws. In the Bulldog Doubles Draw, the duo of Rasmussen and Kreutzer lost to Eastern Washington’s Faye Worrall and Marta Heinen 6-3, but made it to their consolation finals match before falling to Eastern Washington’s Stephanie Broussard and Zoey Nelson 6-2. The pair of Sanabria and Gianan also competed in the Bulldog Draw, but were defeated by Montana State’s Laura Mary and Linda Vink 7-5 in the quarterfinals. Their teammates in the Zag Doubles Draw also struggled, with the tandem Grossman and McCollister losing to Montana State’s Linnea Fristam and Annie Walker 6-2 in the round of 16. The pairing of Jung and Asciuto fared no better, falling in the round of 16 to Anna Findley and Marta Magalhaes of Idaho 6-1.
The Redhawks will head to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals from Oct. 18-22.
