Betsy Bayliss was named Seattle U rowing's first full-time assistant coach beginning August of 2018.
“I am very exciting to be bringing on a full-time assistant coach,” said Head Coach Jenny Park. “The impact this will have on our team is huge. Most importantly, our student-athletes will receive more attention both on and off the water. It will allow us to do more recruiting as a staff and bring in more experienced rowers. “
“I’d like to thank Jenny and the Seattle U athletic department for giving me the opportunity to return to the Seattle U rowing family,” said Bayliss. “This is an exciting time for the rowing program and I am eager to put what I learned in my year away to good use. Seattle U is an excellent university and I could not be happier to work for an institution that provides such meaningful and enriching experiences to its student-athletes on and off the water.”
Bayliss served as an assistant coach for two seasons at her alma mater, the University of Puget Sound, prior to her time at Seattle. She was a four-year member on the Loggers crew team and was elected as a team captain of the novice team. Bayliss competed at the NCAA national championship twice as a student-athlete and led two boats to the national championship as an assistant coach. Also, an assistant coach, three of her novice boats won Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference championships.
“I am beyond excited to have Betsy back on staff,” Park said. “She learned a lot in her year away, including new and exciting experiences that she brings to the table. She has been very successful at bringing novices up to speed, and has a great eye for technique.”
Bayliss was the novice coach during her two previous seasons at Seattle U, guiding the novice 8+ to a gold medal finish at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships in 2017.
Bayliss earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Puget Sound and a master’s degree in Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership from the University of Washington. She holds a Level II Coaching Certification from USRowing.
