KANSAS CITY, Mo. – (August 7) Seattle University men’s soccer is 22nd in the 2018 United Soccer Coaches Preseason Rankings, the organization announced Tuesday morning. SU claimed the 2017 WAC Championship and won an NCAA Tournament for third time in the last five years.
Defending NCAA champion Stanford was voted first in the preseason poll. Indiana and North Carolina were chosen second and third, respectively. Akron checked in No. 4. The Zips visit Championship Field for a non-conference showdown on Sept. 7. Akron eliminated SU in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament on its way to the Final Four.
Coach Pete Fewing’s squad went 15-4-4 and ended last season ranked No. 24. It returns seven regular starters for the 2018 campaign. Nathan Aune is back after earning United Soccer Coaches All-American Third Team honors. Josh Adachi, Anthony Ayala, and Sergio Rivas all return for their senior seasons after claiming all-region accolades in 2017.
The Redhawks also head to Washington, tabbed No. 24 in the rankings, on Sept. 23. SU plays two other teams receiving votes, as WAC foes Grand Canyon (Oct. 7) and Air Force (Oct. 29) both appeared just outside the top 25.
Seattle U opens preseason training on Wednesday. It hosts two exhibition contests, as British Columbia (Aug. 13) and Portland (Aug. 18) both visit Championship Field.
