MESA, Ariz. – (May 23) Seattle U's offense exploded for five runs in the first inning and Tarik Skubal fanned 10 in six frames as the Redhawks won their opening game of the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, 8-3, over Northern Colorado Wednesday afternoon at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz.

After Skubal (8-3) got three quick outs in the top of the first, the Redhawks jumped on Bears' starter Karver Pate. Austin Lively opened with a triple, Justin Mazzone drew a walk and Dalton Hurd's sacrifice fly to center field sent Lively across home plate.

Sean Sutton would strike out for out No. 2, but Seattle U (33-21) rallied. Chase Wells singled through the right side and Curtis Perrin delivered in RBI-single that scored Mazzone from second. Jack Reisinger knocked an RBI-singled to second base and Cameron Sterne laced a double into right field that scored a pair before the inning finally closed with the Redhakws leading 5-0.

Justin Mulvaney entered in the second for UNC and managed to slow the Redhawk offense, allowing just one run over the next six frames.

Skubal continued to dominate, striking out the side in the second before surrendering one hit in the third. But the redshirt junior also collected a strikeout, and ended the inning by inducing a double play ball.

The Redhawks would add one run in the third on a Lively RBI-single to make it 6-0.

Northern Colorado (29-23) finally got on the board in the sixth, scoring one unearned run on a sacrifice fly.

Tyler Yeh entered for Skubal in the seventh and surrendered a pair of unearned runs on a balk and wild pitch.

With the lead trimmed down to 6-3, Seattle U tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth to help secure the win.

Lively finished 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Wells and Sterne had two hits each.

The fourth-seeded Redhawks will await the result of tonight's game between third-seed New Mexico State and sixth-seed CSU Bakersfield to determine whether they will face top-seed Grand Canyon or second-seed Sacramento State Thursday.
