BELLEVUE, Wash. – (May 17) Seattle University baseball could not keep pace with Grand Canyon's hot offense in the opening game of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series Thursday night, falling 12-3 to the Lopes at Bannerwood Park.

The Redhawks drop to 32-19 overall and 13-9 in WAC play while GCU improves to 31-22 on the season and 17-5 in the WAC.

GCU wasted no time jumping out to a lead as Quin Cotton sent the second pitch of the game into deep left-center field for a triple and Pikai Winchester's single up the middle sent the first run across home plate. The Lopes would finish the frame with four runs off three hits, one walk and one Redhawk fielding error.

The Lopes added a fifth run in the second before Seattle U got on the board with a Curtis Perrin two-out, solo homer in the bottom of the second. Each team scored again in the third before Grand Canyon opened up the game with a three-run fourth, making it 9-2.

The visitor would tack on three more runs in the top of the eighth and the Redhawks pushed one across the plate in the home half of the frame for the final balance.

Jake Wong earned the win for GCU after striking out seven in six innings. Tarik Skubal took the loss for the Redhawks after surrendering 10 hits and two walks for nine runs, six earned, in four innings. Skubal also fanned five.

Perrin collected two of the Redhawks' eight hits while six others had one apiece.

The three-game series continues Friday at 2 p.m. and concludes with Senior Day Saturday. The Redhawks' senior class of Lucas Denney, Austin Hansen, Dalton Hurd, Curtis Perrin, Jack Reisinger, Cameron Sterne, Sean Sutton and Ky Dye will be honored in a brief ceremony prior to the 9 a.m. first pitch.
