SEATTLE – (Apr. 30) On June 2, 2018 Seattle University Athletics will host its sixth annual Red Tie Celebration, honoring Father Stephen Sundborg, S.J., as he concludes his 20th year as the university's President.
Fr. Steve joins an elite group of honorees, which includes Jim Whittaker, '60 (2013), Elgin Baylor, '58 (2014), Eddie O'Brien, '53 (2015), Johnny O'Brien, '53 (2015), Pat Lesser Harbottle, '56 (2016), Orrin Vincent, '67 (2016), Thomas Gorman, '68 (2017) and Janet Hopps-Adkisson, '56 (2017).
Fr. Steve became president of Seattle University in July 1997 and now leads a comprehensive, independent university of more than 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students and 1,000 faculty and staff members. He was instrumental in the university's return to NCAA Division I following a 33-year absence and has been an advocate for the continued growth of the Redhaws' 20 sports programs.
Since becoming president, Fr. Steve's key objectives have been to encourage student-centered education, enhance academic excellence, and develop resources to support a growing student population. During his tenure, Seattle University has built a new law school, a student center and student residences. Fr. Steve is strongly committed to promoting social justice, a core value of the Jesuit Catholic education, and actively supports programs that encourage students, faculty, and staff to make a difference, whether in the local community or developing countries.
The Red Tie Celebration, an annual dinner and auction, benefits Seattle University's 300+ student-athletes and programs of Seattle U athletics. The signature event includes dinner, silent and live auctions, and a tribute to special honoree, Fr. Steve, as a culmination to his 20th year as President at Seattle University.
