PORTLAND – (March 13) Dalton Hurd and Chase Wells each drove in four runs and starter Tarik Skubal tossed five scoreless innings as Seattle University baseball earned a 9-6 win over the University of Portland Tuesday at Joe Etzel Field in Portland.
The Redhawks (10-7) scored single runs in the first, third and fifth, before erupting for a four-run sixth to break the game open. Cameron Sterne led off with a double and, one batter later, Austin Lively drove him home with a single down the right-field line. Curtis Perrin reached on a bunt single to third and he and Lively each moved up a base on a wild pitch.
With one out, Sean Sutton was intentionally walked to load the bases for Hurd, whose RBI-single drove in Lively. Two batters later, Wells hit a single to center field which sent Sutton and Perrin across home plate for a 7-0 Redhawk advantage.
Skubal (1-0) struck out three and allowed just one hit in five complete innings before giving way to Drake Maningo in the bottom of the sixth. The Pilots (6-11) would score a pair of runs in off Maningo in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to make it a 7-4 ballgame.
Hurd would respond with his third homer of the year, a two-run bomb, in the top of the eight, to make it 9-4, Seattle U. Portland would add two more runs in the eighth before closer Zach Wolf came in to record the final four outs for his fourth save of the season.
Wells finished with three hits and four RBIs, Lively had three hits and Hurd had two hits and four RBIs to lead the Redhawks.
Seattle U returns to Bannerwood Park Wednesday to host Gonzaga at 4 p.m.
