DENVER – (Feb. 6) Seattle U freshman Colton Weeldreyer earned the Western Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week honor after finishing the weekend 2-1.

A native from Auburn, Wash., Weeldreyer competed well against a tough opponent in Gonzaga but lost in the second flight 6-7 (3-7), 3-7 to open the season, but that didn’t stop him. He bounced back and won his next two matches against Eastern Washington, 6-4, 6-4, and Whitworth, 6-1, 6-2, both in the second flights.

Weeldreyer leads the team with three wins in singles this spring, and has been a tremendous addition to the team.

“Colton is a great competitor who just finds a way to win,” head coach Adam Reeb said. “He has been a huge spark to our team, and I’m happy for him that he received this recognition.”

Weeldreyer and the Redhawks are back in action this weekend in their first home matches of the spring. They host Linfield on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Idaho State on Sunday at 10:30 a.m., both at the Tennis Center at Sand Point.
