SEATTLE – (Jan 25) The Redhawk track and field team will continue its indoor season this weekend with the UW Invitational, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Dempsey Indoor at the University of Washington.

SU started the season on Jan. 13, at the UW Indoor Preview, where head coach Kelly Sullivan felt good about the results, but knows there’s room for improvement.

One of the highlights of the first meet of the season was Keith Beasley. A member of the Army branch of the ROTC program, Beasley has a personal best in the 400m of 49.46 and will look to improve that this season. Today, we spoke to Beasley to get to know him a little better.

Where are you from?

St. Louis, Missouri.

What attracted you to Track and Field?

It was one basketball coach who convinced me to run track when he noticed I would out-lap people on runs at basketball practice. He made me do more than everyone because my mouth would get me in trouble, so I took his advice.

What is your favorite event to participate in?

Has to be the 400m because it is only one lap.

What is your favorite thing about living in Seattle?

Pretty much finding places to read at coffee shops while looking out the windows as the rain sprinkles in the city.

What kind of music would we find on your phone?

Rap, R&B, Pop and motivational speakers.

What is your favorite type of food?

Who is your favorite athlete?

Muhammad Ali is my all-time favorite. He is more than an athlete; he was someone who was an activist, poet and an inspiration to certain communities to call themselves "the greatest" and "pretty" at a time – that he grew up in-- when there was not much hope for those certain communities. He left a legacy as someone who accomplished more than something just sports. Ali was the true people's champion. Because of his influence, I hope to leave a legacy at this school of being more than just some athlete. If not, then I did a horrible job on my part. He even gave me an autograph picture the Christmas before he died.

What is your best memory as a Redhawk?

First time competing in the SU track outfit. It was an honor to compete for a school who appreciates your presence on the team to run for.

What is your favorite tv show, and why?

Empire. Rap being mixed with love/hate is entertaining to watch.

What is your hidden talent?

Playing a tenor saxophone.

What is your favorite, and least favorite subject in school?

My favorite is learning the History like Rome. The least favorite, no disrespect, is any foreign language class.

Other than Track and Field, what is your favorite sport to watch, and why?

Boxing because it's not about watching the sport, but doing the sport and learning from the sport. Boxing teaches the meaning of life and how to bounce back up per knock down. It teaches how to solve a problem before reaching the last round of the fight.

What is your favorite hobby?

Salsa Dancing.

If you were stuck on an island with one teammate, who would it be, and why?

Sam Golden. We can use the training from ROTC on how to survive on an island.
