LAS VEGAS – (Nov. 8) No. 23 Seattle University wiped out CSU Bakersfield, 3-0, in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship Wednesday afternoon. Three different Redhawks scored as SU advanced to the semifinals on Friday night at UNLV’s Johann Memorial Field.

SU will face host and second-seeded UNLV in the semifinals on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“I’m pleased that we got the two goals early in the second half,” said Coach Pete Fewing. “We got a lot of guys on the field and we’ll be ready for Friday night.”

Habib Barry, Gabriel Ruiz, and Sergio Rivas each scored as the Redhawks dominated from whistle to whistle. With the result, Seattle U (13-3-3) will face the winner of Wednesday’s quarterfinal between second-seeded UNLV and seventh-seeded Grand Canyon in a semifinal on Friday.

In the first half Wednesday, SU hit both posts and the crossbar, while CSUB (6-11-1) goalkeeper Detre Bell made two stellar saves to keep the contest scoreless. Finally, Rivas sent a ball ahead to Alex Roldan, who flicked a header towards the net. Barry was there to corral the ball and sidewind a shot in for a 1-0 lead at 39:26.

Seattle U broke out quickly in the second frame, scoring twice in the first 3:44 to all but seal the decision. First, Roldan sent a ball into the box from the left side, setting up a diving header by Ruiz to make it 2-0 at 47:45. Fifty-nine seconds later, Julian Avila-Good sent a terrific ball from SU’s half ahead to Rivas, who ran up and chipped a shot over the goalie for a 3-0 margin.

Seattle U held a 12-4 advantage in shots and logged a 3-0 edge in corner kicks. Josh Adachi made one save to claim his ninth shutout of the season.
