OREM, Utah – (Nov. 4) No. 23 Seattle University men’s soccer won, 2-1, at Utah Valley Saturday night. The Redhawks have earned the third seed in next week’s Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship at UNLV.

“It’s always tough to play here,” said Coach Pete Fewing. “We’ve been looking for some luck and we finally got some tonight. I’m pleased we didn’t look past this game.”

Gabriel Ruiz and Sergio Rivas both scored as SU improved to 12-3-3 overall and 6-1-3 in the WAC.

The teams played a scoreless first half. SU put four shots on goal, but UVU kept it 0-0 after 45 minutes.

Ruiz gave Seattle U a lead early in the second frame. The freshman scored in the box at 47:44. Utah Valley evened the match a few minutes later, making it 1-all.

In the 62nd minute, the Redhawks were fouled in the box, setting up a Rivas penalty kick. The junior converted at 61:18, giving SU a 2-1 advantage.

Seattle U continued to pressure UVU, putting two shots on goal and hitting the crossbar. The Redhawk defense held off the Wolverines and claimed the road decision.

SU outshot its foe, 21-6, and compiled an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Seattle U will play CSU Bakersfield in the first round of the WAC Championship on Nov. 8 at UNLV. SU beat CSUB, 4-0, on Sept. 29 at Championship Field.
