SEATTLE – (Oct. 28) Seattle University women’s soccer took down Utah Valley to win, 2-0, Saturday night at Championship Field. Leahi Manthei and Natasha Howe scored as the Redhawks celebrated their 10 seniors with a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) victory.

"I thought the team played excellently tonight," said Coach Julie Woodward. "We have playing better and better each game the last few weeks. Everyone on this team wanted to win for this special group of seniors."

Seattle U wraps up its regular season with a 7-8-3 record, including a 3-2-2 WAC mark. It will head to Grand Canyon for the WAC Championship next week, opening with New Mexico State on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m.

On Saturday night, the teams battled evenly in the first half, with both sides creating chances, but coming up empty until late in the period. A Stephanie Spiekerman back-heel kick set up Jessie Ray for a run down the middle of the Wolverine defense, where she found a cutting Manthei. The freshman cashed in her seventh goal of the season with a shot across the net for a 1-0 lead at 43:13.

Utah Valley (9-11-0, 5-2-0 WAC) pressured Ashley Routh in the second half, as the Redhawk goalkeeper posted four second-half saves. Routh logged her third consecutive shutout in net with six total saves Saturday.

Late in the contest, Manthei set up a Howe run on the far left side. From nearly 35 yards, Howe chipped a shot over the head of the UVU goalkeeper and into the far upper corner, sealing the decision for the night.

Seniors Abby Bouck and Vanessa Mercado made their first career starts, while the Redhawks honored that duo, along with Spiekerman, Howe, Isabelle Butterfield, Hope Fleckner, Jennifer Plummer, Madeline Racine, Rosalie Sittauer, and Sunshine Soriano before the game.
