SEATTLE – (Oct. 20) Seattle University women’s soccer defeated CSU Bakersfield, 1-0, Friday night. Stephanie Spiekerman scored her first goal of the season to lead the Redhawks to a key Western Athletic Conference (WAC) victory at Championship Field.

"I was proud of the way the team played today," said Coach Julie Woodward. "I thought our mentality in front of the goal was different and that was something we worked on in practice this week. I'm happy with the result."

Seattle U (6-8-2, 2-2-1 WAC) was in control from start to finish, working to create a lopsided shot chart. It grabbed an early lead, as Hannah Carrothers ran down the left side and sent a looping cross towards the box. After the CSUB (6-10-1, 1-3-1 WAC) goalkeeper attempted the clear the ball, Spiekerman was there to finish on the right side, giving SU a margin. The score marked Spiekerman's second career goal.

The Redhawks outshot their foes, 7-0, in the first half. The second frame was similar, as the home side continued to slant the field. Jordan Bertram kept the ‘Runners in it, though, coming up with several key stops in net.

Ashley Routh, making her second start of the season, leaped to prevent a tying goal in the 85th minute. She claimed her first shutout of the season. SU held a 13-4 advantage in shots on the night.

Woodward’s squad travels to Grand Canyon for a WAC contest on Sunday. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start in Phoenix.
