SEATTLE – (Oct. 12) No. 18 Seattle University men’s soccer tied No. 12 Air Force, 2-2, Thursday afternoon at Championship Field. Medo Youssef and Habib Barry scored as the Redhawks moved to 3-0-2 in Western Athletic Conference (WAC) play.
"I can't fault our guys' effort, " said Coach Pete Fewing. "Air Force is a good team. Being up 2-0 on them doesn't mean the game is over and they showed that today."
The top two teams in the WAC standings squared off on a gloomy day on First Hill. SU (9-2-2, 3-0-2 WAC) struck first, as Sergio Rivas made a move to create space on the right side and then crossed a ball to the offensive left, where Youssef settled with control. With room to operate, Youssef turned and lined a shot into the net in the 18thminute, giving SU a 1-0 lead.
The Redhawks were able to keep the field tilted in their direction as the half rolled on. They earned a corner kick in the 32nd minute, with Ozzie Ramos taking the try. Ramos’ kick came to the near post, where Alex Roldan redirected the ball across the goal mouth. Barry was on the spot on the back side, heading the ball into the lower left corner at 31:17.
The visitors (9-1-2, 3-0-1 WAC) answered with a goal a few minutes later, creating a 2-1 margin at the half. SU held a 6-3 advantage in shots at the break.
The rain picked up in the second half, as both teams looked to convert chances. The Falcons found the tying goal in the 71st minute, setting up the closing drama. Each side had multiple opportunities, including a late Rivas shot that missed just wide in the 110th minute.
Seattle U will host Kansas City in another WAC match on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Championship Field.
