EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – (Sept. 15) Seattle University volleyball earned a split in a pair of matches Friday at the Cougar Invitational hosted by SIUE in Edwardsville, Ill. The Redhawks earned a 3-0 victory against Montana, then fell 3-1 to the host Cougars.

In Friday’s opener against Montana (5-6), Seattle U (4-8) held the Grizzlies to a .089 hitting percentage on the 26-24, 30-28, 25-20 straight-sets victory. Katarina Marinkovic led the Redhawks with 14 kills while Maja Stojanovic and Shae Harris had six kills apiece. Harris also had 32 assists, five digs and five blocks. Tijana Milojevic collected 17 digs while Marinkovic had 11 for her fifth double-double of the season.

The first and second sets were tight throughout, each taking extra points to reach a two-point decision. After going ahead 2-0 with the thrilling 30-28 win in the second set, the Redhawks pushed open a 20-9 advantage in the third set. The Griz were able to climb back into the set, pulling within two, 22-20. But Harris and Katarina Glavinic came up with a huge block and back-to-back kills by Marinkovic and Victoria Demmene put the match away.

Glavinic (12), Marinkovic (11) and Stojanovic (10) each tallied double-digit kills in the evening match against SIUE, but the Redhawks hit just .139 for the duration as the Cougars held a 13-5 edge in blocks.

Harris collected a double-double of 40 assists and 14 digs while Milojevic added a match-high 23 digs. Seattle U dropped the first two sets, 25-14 and 27-25, but rallied in the third set to steal a 25-22 win. SIUE would never trail in the fourth set, however, putting the match away with a 25-21 set win.

The Redhawks wrap play at the Cougar Invite, and the non-conference portion of their schedule, on Saturday versus Illinois-Chicago. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. Central, 11:00 a.m. Pacific.
