SEATTLE - (Aug. 13) Seattle University men’s soccer defeated Trinity Western, 4-0, in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon. Cody Buchanan scored two goals to lead the Redhawks at Championship Field.
“I was pleased to get a lot of guys on to the field,” said Coach Pete Fewing. “It’s always good to get a shutout at home. It was a pretty complete performance and we created a lot of chances. We’ll take some things from today and move forward.”
Medo Youssef made a terrific move to create space around two defenders on the right side of the penalty box and then found Noe Meza, who lifted the ball past the goalkeeper while lying on the ground for a goal and a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.
Just a few minutes later, Sergio Rivas found space at the top of the box and let a shot go. The line drive bounced once to evade the Spartan goalie as the Redhawks grabbed a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, SU played the other half of its roster, allowing a number of Redhawks to gain their first experience at Championship Field. In the 62nd minute, freshman Quinn Fahling sent a strong pass ahead to Cody Buchanan, who timed his run to get behind the defense. Buchanan beat the goalkeeper from there, making it 3-0.
Less than three minutes after that, Buchanan looked to make a move from near the top of the box on the left side. With space to spare, the redshirt sophomore hammered a shot into the upper right corner for a 4-0 advantage.
The hosts held an 18-5 advantage in shots and recorded a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.
Seattle U plays another exhibition next weekend, as British Columbia visits Championship Field on Saturday, Aug. 19.
