EDINBURG – (May 10) Mandie Maddux started off Day 1 of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on a high note.
In the first event of the day, the 100 meter hurdles, Maddux set a personal record and took third place with a time of 14.83.
The next two events were season bests for Maddux. She finished in second place in the high jump with a mark of 1.64m (5-4.5) and finished in first place in the shot put with a mark of 11.73m (38-6).
Maddux battled a strong headwind in the 200 meter dash, the final heptathlon event of the day, with a time of 27.25.
“She set herself up well for Day 2,” assistant coach Chad Pharis said. “It will still be a battle to the finish with some strong competition in the Top 3, but Mandie feels great and is ready to carry the momentum forward.”
The WAC Championships continue Thursday, and include the completion of the heptathlon as well as the 10,000m finals.
