EDINBURG, Texas. – (Apr. 14) Seattle U baseball split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at UTRGV Friday, dropping a 7-6, extra-inning affair before rebounding in the nightcap with a 6-5 victory.

The Redhawks moved to 12-20-1 overall and 4-7 in WAC play while the Vaqueros now sit at 19-19 overall and 4-7 in league games.

Following a nearly four-and-a-half hour game one, Seattle U scored the first five runs of game two and held on for the one-run win in yet another 4:30 game.

The Redhawks used four hits in the first inning to push their first run across the plate. They then exploded for four runs in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Aaron Stroosma delivered an RBI-single, Jack Reisinger knocked in two runs and Stroosma would score on a wild pitch.

The Vaqueros put up a four-spot of their own in the home half of the inning, but Seattle U added a sixth run in the sixth and held the UTRGV offense at bay late.

Janson Junk (4-4) earned the win on the mound after fanning seven and allowing four runs (two earned) in five innings. Tyler Oldenberg struck out four and gave up one run in three innings before giving way to Zack Wolf who closed out the ninth for his second save of the season.

The Redhawks dropped the opener 7-6 as the Vaqueros snapped a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Seattle U found itself in an early 2-0 hole in the first, but battled back to score once in the second and once in the fourth, knotting the score at 2-2. UTRGV would go back on top, 4-2, with runs in the fourth and seventh, but the Redhawks answered again.

Rallying late, a Curtis Perrin double to left in the eighth tied the game, 4-4. After a three-up, three-down home half of the inning, Seattle U took the lead in the ninth with a pair of unearned runs. Austin Lively would score the go-ahead run and Stroosma touched home on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Michael Ciancio.

But UTRGV responded yet again. Noah Lee homered off of closer Connor Moore and Victor Garcia, Jr., added an RBI-single to send the game into extra innings.

In the bottom of the 12th, the Vaqueros finally broke through when leadoff Anthony Gomez reached on a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Lee’s single through the left side.

Moore (1-1) took the loss for the Redhawks after giving up the game-tying and later game-winning runs. He struck out three, walked one, scattered five hits and surrendered three earned runs in 3.1 innings.

Connor Grant (5-4) picked up the win for UTRGV in 4.2 innings of relief.

Each team totaled 12 hits. Reisinger went 3-for-4 for SU, while Lively and Stroomsa had two hits apiece.

The three-game WAC series concludes Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. Central Time, 10 a.m. Pacific.
