SEATTLE (Jan. 11) – Seattle University women’s basketball hits the road this weekend, opening a two-game Western Athletic Conference (WAC) road swing at UMKC on Thursday, Jan. 12. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. Central (5 p.m. Pacific) at the Swinney Recreation Center.
SU (4-12, 1-0 WAC) is coming off a 54-47 win over CSU Bakersfield to begin WAC play. Alexis Montgomery, the WAC’s leading scorer, posted 20 points and 7 rebounds, while Jacinta Beckley put up 18 points, setting a new career-high point total for the second straight game.
UMKC (5-10, 0-2 WAC) dropped a pair of road league contests last weekend. It lost, 78-72, at New Mexico State on Jan. 5 and then fell, 74-39, at UTRGV two days later. The Kangaroos have followed a four-game win streak with losses in each of their last seven outings.
Montgomery is averaging 16.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.7 steals through 16 games this season. The senior is the only WAC player to lead her team in all four statistical categories. She also ranks second in the conference with a 43.2 field goal percentage. Beckley has put up double-digit points in three of her last four games, as she has made her first two starts of the season in SU’s two most recent contests.
For UMKC, Samantha Waldron leads the way with 13.9 points per game. She tops the WAC with a 43.3 field goal percentage and 37 made three-pointers. Kristen Moore is registering 9.2 points and 5.1 rebounds for the ‘Roos.
UMKC leads the all-time series, 4-3. The teams have split two meetings in each of the last two seasons, with the home side winning all four matchups.
In the WAC preseason polls, the ‘Roos were voted to finish fifth by the coaches and sixth by the media. The Redhawks were picked to take seventh in both polls.
