The Seattle University softball team hurt its own cause Saturday, making several errors to allow unearned runs to score as the Redhawks lost to Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-1, and to San Diego, 6-2, on the second day of the USD Tournament at the USD Softball Complex.

Fairleigh Dickinson 3, Seattle U 1

After three scoreless innings, Seattle University struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Bubba Morrow (Auburn, Wash.) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a double to center field by Mandie Sugita (Rossmoor, Calif.). The Redhawks had a scoring chance in the fifth inning when Isabella Geronimo (San Mateo, Calif.) singled and Sarah Petosa (Federal Way, Wash.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out, but Seattle U could not bring either runner home.

Fairleigh Dickinson (6-9) broke through in the sixth inning when Alex Portesi led off by reaching base on a Redhawk error and advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Angelique Nieves. Bryana Dorado drove in Portesi with a single up the middle and, after a fielder’s choice, Madison Lerma lined a double into right-center field, scoring Cindy Zamudio. Lerma would come around to score when Seattle U made another error.

Lisa Maulden (Maple Valley, Wash.) led off the sixth inning with a double down the right field line, but pinch runner Jennifer Sweet (Bend, Ore.) was stranded at second base. In the seventh inning, singles by Geronimo, Jenny Hurst (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), and Morrow loaded the bases with two outs, but Megan Reiner was able to retire the final batter on a flyout to preserve the Fairleigh Dickinson victory.

Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) took the loss after giving up seven hits, one walk, and three unearned runs in the complete game effort. Reiner allowed eight hits, two walks, and one run in her seven innings, but she struck out 11 Redhawk hitters.

San Diego 6, Seattle U 2

San Diego (12-10) drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning when Olivia Sandusky hit a one-out single and Jenny Lahitte drew a two-out walk. Danielle Mavridis sent a double into right-center field, scoring Charly Swanberg and Lahitte to give the Toreros an early 2-0 lead.

Petosa led off the third inning with a bunt single, stole second base, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a San Diego error. Morrow began the fourth inning with a solo home run to center field to tie the game at 2-2, and the Redhawks had a chance to score more as Sugita doubled, but Paige Bouska (Keizer, Ore.) was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, ending the Redhawk threat.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kylie Ordos led off with an infield single and safely reached second base on a Redhawk error. Tatum Schultz followed with a single that drove in Ordos and advanced Dana Prelsnik to third base, and Prelsnik would score on a sacrifice fly hit by Caitlin Rooney. After an infield single by Mary Grabowski, Sandusky’s groundout to second base was good enough to score Schultz, increasing the Torero lead to 5-2.

San Diego added one more run in the sixth inning when Lahitte led off with a double before being replaced by pinch runner Morgan Kurtz, who advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Redhawk error. Lahitte reentered the game in the top of the seventh inning and finished off her complete game victory.

Richelle Ashburn (Post Falls, Idaho) took the loss for the Redhawks, allowing six hits, one walk, and five runs, only two of them earned, in five innings. Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) came on in relief in the sixth inning and struck out the side, but not before giving up two hits and one unearned run.

Seattle University (10-18) will conclude its participation in the USD Tournament with two games Sunday, March 16, first facing Weber State at 9 a.m. before taking on San Diego at 2 p.m.
