Thanks to three golfers landing in the top 20 of the individual standings, the Seattle University men’s golf team is in second place after Monday’s opening round of the Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational, hosted by Southern Utah University at the Sunbrook Golf Club.

Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) posted Seattle U’s best round of the day, shooting one-under-par 71 to end the day in a tie for 10th place. Luka Karaula (Zapresic, Croatia) made five birdies during the round and is tied for 15th place after shooting even-par 72.

David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) shot one-under-par on the par-five holes and is tied for 17th place at one-over-par 73. Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) played a steady round, tying for the tournament lead with 15 pars as he shot two-over-par 74 to finish the day in a tie for 21st place. Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) also collected five birdies during Monday’s round, but came in at seven-over-par 79 to end the day in a tie for 47th place.

As a team, Seattle U combined for a score of two-over-par 290, six strokes behind Utah Valley at the top of the tournament standings. Logan France of Boise State and J.T. Timmons of Utah Valley lead the individual standings after each player shot five-under-par 67 in the first round.

The second and final round of the tournament will take place Tuesday, Feb. 11, with a shotgun start scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time (8:00 a.m. Pacific time).
