Seattle University women’s tennis completed singles play on day one of the WSU Invitational hosted by Washington State in Pullman, Wash. Highlighting the day for the Redhawks included Gabriella Weissmann’s (Simi Valley, Calif.) advancement to the Flight 3 championship game and Dayna Bennett’s (Issaquah, Wash.) consolation bracket win.

In Flight 1 singles, Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) fell to Washington State’s Elizaveta Luzina, 6-0, 6-3, and Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) fell to Idaho’s Almudena Sanz, 6-3, 6-3. In consolation play, Eastern Washington’s Dani Young defeated Lucas, 6-2, 2-6 (10-7), and fellow Eagle Moira Hedburg defeated Lambert, 6-2, 6-3. In the seventh place match, Lucas defeated Lambert, 6-3, 7-5.

In Flight 2 singles, Idaho’s Rita Bermudez defeated Kailyn Skjonsby (Grapeview, Wash.), 6-1, 6-2, Eastern Washington’s Katrina Domingo defeated Jacqueline Jacques (Modesto, Calif.), 6-3, 6-4, and Idaho’s Galina Bykova defeated Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas), 6-0, 6-1. In consolation play, Skjonsby defeated Jacques in the seventh place match, 6-0, 3-1 (retired) after James was defeated in the consolation bracket finals by Eastern Washington’s Erin Blessing, 6-2, 6-0.

In Flight 3, Weissmann advanced to the championship game before being defeated by Washington State’s Dajana Ognjenovic, 6-2, 6-1. In the first round, Ognjenovic also defeated Bennett, 6-0, 6-0. Samantha Garrard (Issaquah, Wash.) advanced as far as the semifinals before being defeated by fellow Redhawk Weissmann en route to the championship game. Garrard finished fourth in the bracket, defeated in the third place match by Idaho’s Belen Barcenilla, 6-1, 6-0. Bennett won the consolation bracket, defeating Malieva Hedburg, 6-4, 4-6 (10-4) after defeating Eastern Washington’s Brittany Ellingson, 6-4, 3-6 (10-3).
