W. Tennis Opens Play at Cougar Classic

Seattle University women’s tennis continued the 2013-14 season at the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.

In Flight 1 singles, Gonzaga’s Kylie Peek defeated Kelli Woodman (Denver, Colo.), 6-3, 6-2, and Utah State’s Kallie Sperry defeated Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.), 6-1, 6-1. In the same bracket, Idaho’s Galina Bykova defeated Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.), 6-3, 6-1, Montana State’s Ellie Crum defeated Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.), 6-4, 7-5, and Gonzaga’s Samantha Polayes defeated Barbara Carey (Seattle, Wash.), 6-4, 6-2.

In the Flight 1 consolation bracket, Idaho’s Beatriz Flores defeated Woodman, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3, Lewis-Clark State’s Bryn Oliveira defeated Weissman, 3-0, and Gonzaga’s Isabell Klingert defeated Wurden, 6-1, 7-5.

In Flight 2 singles, Gonzaga’s Franziska Koehler defeated Jacqueline Jacques (Modesto, Calif.), 6-1, 6-0, Washington State’s Lize Leenknecht defeated Samantha Garrard (Issaquah, Wash.), 6-0, 6-0, and Boise State’s Bobbi Oshiro defeated Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas), 6-0, 6-2. In the same bracket, Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Portland’s Gabrielle Gorence, 6-1, 6-2, and Kailyn Skjonsby (Grapeview, Wash.) defeated Portland State’s Megan Govi by withdrawal.

In second round action, Idaho’s Rita Bermudez defeated Lucas, 6-4, 6-2, and Washington State’s Dajana Ognjenovic defeated Skjonsby, 6-0, 6-1.

In the Flight 2 consolation bracket, Portland’s Marina Reimers defeated Jacques by withdrawal.

In Flight 1 doubles, Utah State’s McKenzie Davis/Kallie Sperry defeated Lambert/Carey, 6-2, and Boise State’s Bobbi Oshiro/Megan LaLone defeated Weissman/Woodman by withdrawal.

In Flight 2 doubles, Lucas/Garrard defeated Montana State’s Molly Crum/Gabi Villegas, 6-2, but Washington State’s Maria Biryukova/Dajana Ognjenovic defeated Skjonsby/Jacques and Idaho’s Stuhlmann/Beatriz Flores defeated James/Wurden, 6-4.

The team continues play in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29.
