At the annual Seattle University Athletics Awards Show Thursday, May 30, Nate Roberts (Silverdale, Wash.), shortstop on the Redhawk baseball team, and Stephanie Verdoia, forward on the Seattle U women's soccer squad, were named the 2012-13 Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year.
Roberts was a constant member of the Redhawk lineup during the first four years of the reborn baseball program, breaking out this season to earn First Team All-WAC honors after leading the team with 61 hits, 17 doubles, five home runs, and 45 RBI. He worked hard to improve his cumulative grade point average above 3.0 and was always involved in the team’s community service projects.
Verdoia led the Redhawks with 10 goals, including four game-winning goals, 21 total points, and 24 shots on goal. A First Team All-WAC selection, she also was named to the All-WAC Tournament Team after scoring both goals in Seattle U’s 2-1 win over Louisiana Tech that advanced the team into the tournament semifinals. Over her first five quarters at Seattle U, Verdoia has compiled a 3.98 grade point average, and her service projects included traveling to Belize over Spring Break to assist Professionals Without Borders.
Both Roberts and Verdoia previously earned Featured Student-Athlete of the Week honors during the 2012-13 campaign. Verdoia was named for the week of Sept. 10, 2012, after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Redhawks defeat Gonzaga in Spokane, 1-0, the previous Sunday. Roberts picked up recognition for the week of March 18, 2013, after collecting six hits, including two doubles, and driving in four runs as the Redhawks defeated Saint Martin's and took two of three games from UC Davis.
From Julia Besagno on Aug. 21, 2012, through Meeghan Bergmann on May 27, 2013, 37 Seattle U student-athletes were recognized with the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week award on GoSeattleU.com. The honor showcases the accomplishments of selected Redhawks in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. The award is scheduled to return starting the week of Aug. 26, 2013.
With the Western Athletic Conference sponsoring men’s soccer and men’s swimming starting in 2013-14, 19 of Seattle U’s 20 sports will be housed within the WAC next season. Seattle U, along with Idaho and New Mexico State, will remain in the WAC and will be joined by CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, UMKC, UT Pan American, and Utah Valley in the next academic year.
