Once again a Seattle University/Eastern Washington women’s tennis match went down to the wire, and on Sunday the Redhawks came out on top, winning 4-3 at the Thorpe Fieldhouse in Cheney, Wash.

The Redhawks opened up the match by taking the doubles point. At No. 3 doubles, Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) started things off by breezing past Brittany Ellingsen and Alyssa Nagai of Eastern Washington 8-1. The Eagles then evened up the doubles contest by taking the top doubles match 8-4, where Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) fell to Moira Hedberg and Chelsea Patton.

SU clinched the all-important doubles point at the No. 2 doubles spot, where Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) teamed up to take down Alexis Filliol and Rocio Norena of EWU 8-5.

Newman quickly gave Seattle U a two-point lead once singles play started, taking the second singles match 6-2, 6-0 over Patton. Eastern Washington bounced back by winning the next three singles matches to finish, as Warner defeated Weissmann 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, Hedberg beat Lambert 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Filliol dispatched Lucas 6-2, 7-5 in the fourth singles spot.

Down by one with two matches left to finish, Seattle U rallied for the match win as Wurden evened the score at 3-all by beating Norena 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. James then clinched the victory for the Redhawks at No. 6 singles, but not before bouncing back from losing the first set 6-7. She took the second set over Ellingsen 6-0 then finished the match with a 6-3 third-set win to clinch her fifth dual singles victory of the year.

With the win, the Redhawks advance to 6-16 on the year (0-9 WAC). They have one more match left in the 2013 dual season, a home contest against Washington State Friday, April 19. That match will begin at 2:30 at Amy Yee Tennis Center in Seattle.
