After a snowstorm delayed the Seattle University women’s tennis team’s final Western Athletic Conference match of the year Saturday, the Redhawks were finally able to square off against UTSA, losing 4-0 to the Roadrunners in Lewiston, Idaho.
In the interest of time, the Redhawks and Roadrunners did not play any doubles matches and instead played the regulation six singles matches first. UTSA swept the first four individual contests to finish, clinching the win and ending the match early. At No. 3 singles, Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) fell in a three-set match, taking the middle set against Alena Shichkova of UTSA. Weissmann lost the first set 6-3, but swept the second 0-6 to force a deciding third set. Shichkova dominated the final set, however, taking the match 6-3, 0-6, 6-0.
At No. 1 singles, Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) took five games total from Jacobea Junger, losing that contest 6-2, 6-3, while Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) fell in straight 6-2 sets to Isabelle Jonsson in the second singles position.
Dayna Bennett (Issaquah, Wash.) saw action in the fourth singles position, the highest spot in the lineup she’s competed in. Bennett fell 6-0, 6-1 to UTSA’s Kavya Menon.
Two matches were started but stopped once UTSA clinched the victory. At No. 5 singles, Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) held a 3-2 lead over Miranda Poile halfway through the first set, and in the sixth singles position Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) was tied 2-2 with Irene Gandara Gonzalez.
The Redhawks (5-16, 0-9 WAC) will play their final road match of the year Sunday, April 14, with a 9:00 a.m. showdown with in-state rival Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash.
