Despite mounting a furious comeback during singles play, the Seattle University women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Western Athletic Conference opponent Utah State Sunday in Logan, Utah.

The comeback started in the second singles position, where Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) dispatched Jaci West in two sets. With the Redhawks down 2-0 after losing the doubles point and first singles match, Newman claimed the squad's first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over West. The win was Newman’s third WAC singles victory on the year.

Next, Seattle U drew the match even at 2-2 when Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) tallied her fourth victory of the year in No. 3 singles. Weissmann dispatched Kristina Voytsekhovich in straight 6-4 sets for the win. Seattle U then took the lead with the next singles match to finish, as Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) took down Utah State’s Hillary Hayes 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

That was it for the Redhawks in singles play, however, as Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) lost a three-set match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to Kallie Sperry. Utah State clinched the match in the last singles match to finish, the sixth singles matchup between Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) and Ashley Stuhlmann. Stuhlmann took the first set against James 6-1 and won the second 6-3 to secure the victory for the Aggies.

In the No. 1 singles match, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) fell to McKenzie Davis 6-0, 6-1 to open the individual competition.

The Redhawks opened the match by losing the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Weissmann teamed with Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.), losing to the USU team of Davis and West by a score of 8-1. Lucas and Newman took on Sperry and Voytsekhovich at No 2 doubles, losing 8-2 and clinching the doubles point for Utah State.

The third doubles match, between Wurden and James for SU and Hays and Ashley Stuhlmann for the Aggies, was ended once the other two doubles matches finished up. The Utah State duo held a 5-4 lead when it was stopped, but Seattle U held the serve.

Seattle U (5-14, 0-7 WAC) will next see action Friday, April 12 with the squad travels to Moscow, Idaho, to take on WAC opponent Idaho. That match will start at 3:00 p.m.
