The Seattle University closed out their longest road trip of the season Friday, losing two Western Athletic Conference matches at the Bobcat Tennis Complex in San Marcos, Texas.

San Jose State 7, Seattle University 0

The Redhawks opened the day with a contest against San Jose State. The Spartans swept the doubles matches as Seattle U shuffled the doubles lineup a bit. Playing together for the first time in their careers, Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) claimed three points at No. 2 doubles, but fell 8-3 to the team of Jessica Willett and Amber Walker from SJSU. Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) also lost 8-3, this time to Chau Troung and Julianna Bacelar at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, SU didn’t fare any better, losing all six matches in two sets. No Redhawk earned more than three points in a single set, as Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) took three games in her second set against Troung at No. 2 singles. Lambert lost that match 6-1, 6-3.

Also taking four games total in the match, Weissmann squared off against Erica Medlin in the third singles position. Weissmann won two games in each set but lost the match 6-2, 6-2.

UT Arlington 5,Seattle University 2

The Redhawks fared better in the afternoon match against UT Arlington, claiming two points off the Mavericks. Atop the singles lineup, Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) dispatched UTA’s Katar Dikosavlievic in straight sets, winning both by a score of 6-2. SU also claimed the point from No. 4 singles, where Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) won when her opponent Verena Scott retired. Lucas lost the first set 6-1, but was ahead in the second 3-2 when Scott ceded the match.

Weissmann nearly forced a deciding third set in her match at No. 3 singles, taking the second set to a tiebreak. After losing the first set 6-3, Weissmann swapped points with Brook, forcing a set-tiebreak. Brook put together two straight points at the end of the tiebreak, however, and took the set 7-6(7-5). At No. 5 singles, Wurden also challenged opponent Elizabeth Thoms in the first set by winning four games, but Thoms pulled out the set victory 6-4. In the second set, however, Wurden fell 6-1, clinching the match for Thoms.

The Spartans clinched the team victory at No. 6 singles where Liucija Smaizyta defeated James in straight sets.

After seven days and nine matches in three different locations, Seattle University (5-12, 0-5 WAC) will finally return home for a few days and rest from the grueling trip over Spring Break. They next take the court Saturday, April 6 in Logan, Utah, with a match against WAC-foe Denver. That match will kick off at 4:00 p.m.
