Through strong play all-around play, the Seattle University women’s tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M Kingsville Thursday in New Braunfels, Texas.

The match started out with the Redhawks taking two of three doubles contests. At No. 3 doubles, Dayna Bennett (Issaquah, Wash.) and Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) earned their first doubles win of the year together, taking down Ashton Garcia and Alexandra Carrillo 8-1.  In the second doubles slot, the Redhawks clinched the doubles point when Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) beat Victoria Rios and Tabata Lua Cervantes 8-3.

Seattle U couldn’t clinch the doubles sweep, however, as Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) fell 8-2 to the Javelinas’ Marija Dimitrovska and Maria Herrera in the first doubles position.

In singles play, the Redhawks kept the pressure on the Javelinas, taking five of six singles points. Wurden was the first to finish her contest, easily dispatching Rios for the second time of the day 6-0, 6-0.

After that, Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) lost a tough-fought match to Herrera 7-5, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, but Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) got the point back with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Cervantes. SU clinched the match at No. 5 singles, where Mortera claimed her second straight victory and second win of the day over Garcia, taking the individual contest 6-0, 6-2.

James then added a point with SU’s second 6-0, 6-0 win of the day, this one coming at No. 6 singles over Carrillo, and Lambert finished the day with a come-from-behind three set victory over Dimitrovska. Lambert dropped the first set 3-6, but won a tight 7-5 second set, then finished the match off with a 6-3 third set victory.

The Redhawks (5-10, 0-3 WAC) finish up their nine-match, seven-day road trip Friday, March 29 with two Western Athletic Conference matches.  The Redhawks will square off against San Jose State at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time and UT Arlington at 3:00 p.m. Pacific. Both matches will take place in San Marcos, Texas.
