The Seattle University women’s tennis team continued its extensive road trip of nine matches in seven days with a 5-2 loss to Idaho State Tuesday at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Redhawks started out the match by winning the doubles point, coming out ahead in all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) won their first doubles match of the season, taking down Idaho State’s team of Marian Tangarife and Laura Theus 8-6. In the second doubles match, Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) also won by a score of 8-6, besting the Bengals’ Wiebke Boeckmann and Svenja Tegtmeier.

Rounding out the doubles lineup, Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) won their third straight doubles match together with an 8-4 victory over Madelyn Weltzin and Kasey Bacon.

The Bengals fought back in singles play, however, taking five of the six individual contests. The lone SU singles victory came at the top of the lineup, where Newman took down Tangarife in three sets. Newman lost the first set 5-7 but came roaring back to sweep the second 6-0. She took the third set 6-2 to win her seventh singles match of the spring season.

At No. 5 singles, Lucas also played a three-set match while squaring off against ISU’s Theus. Lucas won the first set 3-6, then forced a tiebreak in the second set but fell 7-6(12-10). Lucas also lost the third set super tiebreak 10-7, ceding the point to Idaho State.

Idaho State clinched the match with a win at No. 2 singles, where the Redhawks’ Lambert and Bengals’ Bacon squared off. Lambert forced an extra game in the second set before falling 7-5, then lost the second set 6-2, ending SU’s chances to win the match.

Rounding out the singles lineup, Weissmann fell to Tegtmeier at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1, Wurden lost to Weltzin 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth slot, and Dayna Bennett (Issaquah, Wash.), playing in just her second singles dual contest of the year, fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to Boeckmann.

The Redhawks’ (4-10) hectic road trip continues Thursday, March 28 when they take on Texas A&M Kingsville in San Marcos, Texas. That match is slated for a 10:00 a.m. Pacific start, which is 12:00 p.m. in San Marcos.
