The Seattle University women’s tennis team continued its busy week, playing two matches Monday at Bally’s Tennis Courts in Las Vegas, Nev.

Seattle University 7, Western New Mexico 0

The Redhawks opened the day with a 7-0 victory over Western New Mexico. SU won point contested in the morning, including all two doubles contests, where the biggest win came from Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) and Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.), who took down WNMU’s Berberic and Morrill 8-2.

In the singles contests, the Redhawks continued their dominance. At No. 5 singles, Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) won her first match in two years after not playing at all in the 2011-12 season. Mortera beat Diamond Morrill 6-2 in the first set, and then swept the second 6-0 for the win.

At No. 6 singles, Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) won her second singles match in a row, defeating Davida Aragon in straight 6-1 sets. After Lucas clinched the match for SU with a two-set win at the fourth singles position, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) tallied a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Ashley Newell at No. 2 singles.

Rounding out the SU lineup in the morning, Newman also won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) closed out the match with a three-set supertiebreak win over Claudia Osuna in the third singles position.

Southern Utah 5, Seattle University 2

The Redhawks ended the day by squaring off against Southern Utah. SU lost the doubles point to begin that match, but Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) and James avoided a doubles sweep by outlasting the Thunderbirds’ duo of Afton Staheli and Madeline Skaras 9-7.

SU nabbed two points in singles play with wins coming from the bottom two singles spots. At No. 5 singles, Wurden needed just two sets to dispatch Skaras for a second time in the match, winning 6-4, 6-1, while James and Staheli played extra tennis again as well. James won the first set 6-2, but Staheli came back and took the second 4-6. James bounced back and won the third set 6-4 for her third straight win and third dual singles victory of her career.

In the fourth singles position, Lucas also played three sets, taking on Anastasiia Vasileva. Lucas took the first set 5-7, but fell 6-0 in the second. Despite Lucas winning two games in the third and deciding set, Vasileva won the set 6-2 and the match and point for SUU.

The Thunderbirds clinched the match when Olya Kunz took down Newman at the top of the singles lineup. Newman lost in straight 7-5 sets.

The Redhawks (4-9) finish off their brief stay in Las Vegas Tuesday, March 26 when the square off against Idaho State. That match will start at 9:00 a.m.
