After earning his first victories of the dual season Sunday, senior Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) has been named GoSeattleU.com’s Featured Student-Athlete of the Week.
Malagutti earned his first win in both singles and doubles play for the Seattle U men’s tennis team Sunday. In singles play, he took down Spencer Nielsen of Southern Utah in straight sets. At No. 5 singles, Malagutti took the first set 6-1, and then swept the second by a score of 6-0 to earn his first singles win in three tries in 2013.
Earlier in the match, he and Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) took on the Thunderbirds’ duo of Russ Christensen and Spencer Nielsen at No. 3 singles. Despite having not played with each other in a competitive match before, the Redhawks’ duo took the match 8-3 with both SU players earning their first doubles win of the season as well.
Thanks in part to Malagutti’s wins, the Redhawks also earned their first dual victory of the season Sunday, a 7-0 win over Southern Utah.
In addition to on the tennis court, Malagutti has seen recent success in the classroom as well. The senior has a tallied a 3.679 grade point average as an economics major.
“Flavio is a great inspiration to the team,” said Seattle U head men’s tennis coach Mark Frisby. “He brings a positive attitude and great enthusiasm every day.”
Malagutti and the rest of the SU men’s tennis team will wrap up a three-day, four-match trip to Las Vegas, Nev., Tuesday, March 26 with a 9:00 a.m. showdown with Eastern Washington at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
The Seattle University athletics department names a Featured Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in the classroom and in competition.
