Thanks to wins all across the lineup, the Seattle University men’s tennis team won its first match of the season Sunday, taking every contest in a 7-0 victory over Southern Utah at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Redhawks started their dominance early in the day, allowing the Thunderbirds to claim just four games total in three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) and Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) swept the SUU duo of Alex Dial and Spencer Nielsen by a score of 8-0, while Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) ceded just one game at No. 1 doubles, beating Southern Utah’s Troy Benson and Bryton Wells 8-1.

At No. 3 doubles, Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) and Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) also earned a doubles victory, beating Russ Christensen and Branden Olcott 8-3.

Two Redhawks earned their first dual singles victories of the year Sunday. In the fourth singles position, Rapp dominated SUU’s Christensen, losing just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Also claiming a 6-1, 6-0 victory, Malagutti earned his first singles match of the season over Nielsen.

Atop the singles lineup, Lynch nabbed his first career victory at No. 1 singles when he dispatched Benson 7-6, 6-3.

Kosanke returned to his winning form in a big way, winning all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Wells, while Bediones dispatched SUU’s Olcott 6-0, 6-2. Rounding out the lineup, Clare earned the highest-seeded win of his career when he topped Dial 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Seattle U (1-12) looks to continue its winning ways Monday, March 25 with two more matches at the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas. The Redhawks start the day with a 9:00 a.m. match against Western New Mexico and will face Youngstown State at 1:00 p.m.
