Forward T.J. Diop (Queensland, Australia), one of five seniors on this year's Seattle University men's basketball team, has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com for his work both on the basketball court and in the classroom.
Diop has appeared in 21 games this season, including a place in the starting lineup on Senior Night against UT Arlington Feb. 16, and he is averaging 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game for the Redhawks. He finished with six points and four rebounds at Louisiana Tech Jan. 19, plus he enjoyed a four-point, six-rebound performance against Utah State Feb. 2.
After transferring from Lamar Community College in Colorado, Diop started the Jan. 19, 2012 game against Utah State and played in 23 games overall during the 2011-12 season, averaging 2.3 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. He finished with seven points and six rebounds against Northwest University Feb. 14, 2012, and he picked up five points and seven rebounds against Eastern Washington Jan. 16, 2012.
"T.J. has been a joy to have as part of our program over the past two years. He works extremely hard on and off the court," Seattle U head men's basketball coach Cameron Dollar said.
In the classroom, Diop is pursuing a degree in sociology and currently carries a 3.175 grade point average.
The Seattle University men's basketball team (8-19, 3-14 WAC) closes the regular season first with the ShoWare College Showcase against CSU Bakersfield Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at the ShoWare Center in Kent. That is followed by the final conference game of the season at Idaho Saturday, March 9, at 7:05 p.m., before the team heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for the WAC Basketball Tournament March 12-16.
