The Seattle University women's tennis team squared off against a tough Gonzaga squad Saturday, falling 6-1 to the Bulldogs at the Spokane Racquet Club in Spokane, Wash.

Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.) was the only Redhawk to pull off a victory, outlasting the Bulldogs' Katie Edwards in a three-set match atop the singles lineup. Edwards won the first set through a tiebreaker 6-7(7-4), but Newman breezed through the second set 6-1 and took the third and deciding set 6-4 for her fifth win of the dual season.

Making a trip to her home town, Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) played tough in the second singles position, forcing Gonzaga's Kylie Peek to three sets. Peek won the first set thanks to a tiebreak but Lambert bounced back and won the second set. Lambert couldn't extend the rally into the third set, however, and lost 7-6(7-4), 3-6, 6-2.

At No. 3 singles, Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) took seven games from Isabell Klingert but lost 6-4, 6-3, while Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) saw action for the third time the season, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Gonzaga's Franziska Koehler.

Rounding out the singles results, Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) both lost their matches 6-2, 6-2. Wurden fell to the Bulldogs' Samantha Polayes at No. 4 singles, while Lucas lost to Allexandra Tallas in the fifth singles slot.

SU lost all three doubles matches, ceding the doubles point to Gonzaga to begin the match. At No. 1, Lambert and Weissmann fell to the Bulldogs' duo of Edwards and Peek 8-2, while Newman and Lucas lost 8-3 to Polayes and Melanie Yates in the second doubles spot. The Redhawks' duo of Wurden and Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) hung tough with their opponents, Koehler and Britta Stime, for much of the match but lost in the end, 8-5.

The Redhawks' (3-4) will enjoy the friendly confines of home in exactly one week as they play host to Eastern Washington Saturday, Feb. 3. That match will start at 5:00 p.m. at The Sammamish Club in Issaquah, Wash.
