Despite winning the doubles point, the Seattle University women's tennis team fell in a heartbreaker 4-3 to Portland State Friday at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.

The Redhawks won two of three doubles matches, with Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo, Wash.) and Kristen James (Lubbuck, Texas) leading the way at No. 3 doubles. The duo paired up to dispatch Portland State's team of Daria Burobina and Nayanatara Vadali 8-3. Also winning in doubles play was Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lindsey Newman (Freeland, Wash.). They beat the Vikings' Kelsey Frey and Megan Govi 8-5 in the second doubles position.

At No. 1 doubles, the match between SU's Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) and Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Portland State's Mandy Mallen and Marti Pellicano was stopped while it was tied at six games apiece. That match was stopped since the Redhawks had already clinched the doubles point.

Seattle U could not carry the momentum gained in doubles play over to the singles matches, however, as only two Redhawks were victorious while playing solo.

Newman won her second contest of the match in spectacular fashion, winning all 12 games over PSU's Alexa McDonald at No. 2 singles. The final score of that contest was 6-0, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Corrine Wurden came out ahead in two sets. She beat Pellicano 7-5, 7-6(7-4).

Both Weissmann and Lucas hung tough with their PSU opponents, Mallen and Frey respectively. At No. 3 singles, Weissmann pushed Mallen to the brink in the first set before falling in the match 7-5, 6-3, and at No. 4 singles, Lucas forced a tiebreak in the first set but ultimately lost the match 7-6(7-5), 6-1.

At the top of the singles lineup, Lambert fell to Burobina 6-4, 6-3, and in the sixth singles position, Steffanie Mortera played her first dual match in over a year but fell 6-3, 6-4 to Govi of Portland State.

Seattle U is back in action Friday, February 1st when they venture to Pocatello, Idaho, and take on Idaho State at 1:00 p.m. Pacific.
