After completing the 2012 cross country season by competing in both the Western Athletic Conference Championships and the NCAA West Regional, sophomore Madison Davis (Camano Island, Wash.) has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on

Recovering from an injury that affected her first year at Seattle U, Davis started the season by cutting almost 100 seconds off her time at the UW/SU Open at Magnuson Park, posting a time of 18:03.33 over the three-mile course. She continually lowered her five-kilometer time throughout the season, first cutting 20 seconds off her time at the National Catholic Championships (19:24.6) with a 58th-place finish at the Dellinger Invitational (19:04).

At the WAC Cross Country Championships in Ruston, La., Oct. 27, she finished in 33rd place over the five-kilometer course with a personal-best time of 18:45.84. Two weeks later at the NCAA West Regional at Jefferson Park Golf Course, she posted a six-kilometer personal best with a time of 22:38, helping the women's cross country team to a 23rd-place finish in its first-ever NCAA Division I regional competition.

"We spent last year getting Madison 100% recovered from an injury she had been dealing with since high school. While frustrating for her, taking the time to do that gave her the opportunity to go into the summer being able to train at full capacity and go into her sophomore year fully ready to go," Seattle U head cross country and track and field coach Trisha Steidl said. "She was very focused over the summer and her hard work paid off with a very solid cross country season. She was consistently in the team's top seven, which is pretty awesome for someone who wasn't able to run last year to turn things around like that. The focus she puts into her running is the same as what she puts into her academics, and I believe she will continue to flourish both in the classroom and on the track."

In the classroom, Madison currently carries a 3.66 grade point average and is majoring in environmental studies. She is a member of the Seattle U Student-Athlete Advisory Council and has been active within the team's community service projects helping organizations such as Northwest Harvest and King County Parks.

Davis and the Seattle University cross country team are starting to prepare for the indoor track and field season, which will begin with the UW Indoor Preview Saturday, Jan. 12, at Dempsey Indoor. The WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place in Albuquerque, N.M., Feb. 21-23.

The Seattle University athletics department names a Featured Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in the classroom and in competition.
