Seattle University women’s soccer (7-6-1, 2-1-1) hosted conference leader Utah State (8-2-6, 3-0-2) in a battle for first place and, despite scoring first, fell in overtime, 2-1. The loss snapped a five-game home winning streak and four-game overall undefeated streak for Seattle U.

“I was happy with the way we started the game,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “We created a few opportunities and went up, 1-0. I give credit to Utah State; they must have made some adjustments at halftime, because I think they gave us a hard time in the second half. They were able to put one away when it counted.”

Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) struck first for the Redhawks, scoring an early goal in the 5th minute to take the lead, 1-0. Verdoia, the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Week, now leads the team with eight goals, 17 points, and 36 shots in 2012. She also led the team with three shots, one on goal, in today’s match.

In the 39th minute, Jackie Tillotson tied the score, 1-1, on her first goal of the season, assisted by Mari Miyashiro.

After Seattle U primarily dominated possession in the first half, outshooting the Aggies, 8-3, the score remained tied at the half. Utah State came out strong in the second half, but neither team was able to add to their score in regulation.

In the 99th minute, nearly nine minutes into overtime, Maris Hamblin was able to get the ball in the net for Utah State, assisted by Jade Tarver, and the Aggies came away with the win. This was also Hamblin’s first goal of the season.

In goal, Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) played a complete game, recording four saves. Goalkeeper Ashlyn Mulford recorded one save in a complete game for the Aggies. Despite the loss, Seattle U outshot Utah State, 14-10.

The Redhawks hit the road to close out the weekend, traveling to San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m. They continue their road stretch, heading to face Louisiana Tech on Friday, Oct. 19, and return home for the final weekend of the regular season. Seattle U hosts New Mexico State on Friday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. and hosts pre-season conference favorite Denver for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 12 p.m.
