Leaders of the WAC: After the fourth week of competition, Taylor Ritzman leads the WAC in points per match (1.50) and goals per match (0.67). As a team, the Redhawks rank third in points (33), goals per game (1.38), assists (11), assists per game (1.38), tied for third in goals (11) and shutouts (3), fourth in fewest goals allowed (8) and lowest GAA (0.96), and sixth in shots (120).
Scouting Portland: Portland (5-1-1) is led by junior Amanda Frisbie, a two-time WCC Player of the Week so far this season. Frisbie has recorded a team-high six goals, 13 points, and 23 shots, also recording one assist. Junior Erin Dees has a 3-1-1 record in goal with 14 saves, while redshirt sophomore Nichole Downing owns a 2-0-0 record in goal, recording seven saves. The Pilots have topped North Carolina, Oregon, and USC so far this season, while also tying Notre Dame. After hosting Seattle U on Friday, Sept. 21, they host the Redhawks’ fellow WAC team, Denver, on Sunday, Sept. 23.
Last Time Out: The then-No. 8 Pilots and Redhawks last faced on Sept. 2, 2011, at the University of Washington’s Husky Nike Invitational, when Seattle U came away with the 2-0 shutout victory. Emma Levy scored her first goal of the season, the gamewinner, and Stephanie Verdoia shot the insurance goal for her second goal of the season. The defense protected the shutout led by then-seniors Renee Vandermause and Jordan Salisbury, then-junior Carlee Norquist, and then-sophomore Mary Hill. Goverde tallied six saves and recorded her third shutout of the year.
Scouting Utah Valley: The Wolverines are 1-6-1 entering the weekend, topping Sacred Heart, 3-2, in their only win so far this season. Senior Regan Benson and junior Natalie Baker lead the team with three goals and 19 shots apiece. Junior Lexi Dunn and senior Shalayne Janis lead the Wolverines with two assists apiece. The goalkeeping duo, redshirt freshman Jessica Duffin and junior Lauren Sack, have recorded 27 and 26 saves apiece, respectively. Utah Valley takes on Seattle U’s fellow WAC member, Idaho, in Moscow on Friday, before making the trip to Seattle.
Last Time Out: The two teams last faced on Sept. 29, 2010, at Championship Field, where the Redhawks took the 2-1 victory. In the come-from-behind win, Kara Kuttler and Kassandra Riozzi scored for Seattle U, and goalkeeper Madison Goverde played all 90 minutes.
