After scoring the game-winning goal for
the second week in a row in Seattle U women’s soccer’s 1-0 victory at Gonzaga,
Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) has been named Featured Student-Athlete
for the week of Sept. 3-9 on GoSeattleU.com. This is the third honoree for the
team this season, as Julia Besagno (Maple Valley, Wash.) and Taylor Ritzman
(Holladay, Utah) have also been named.
“Stephanie has been playing extremely
well this season,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “She is such a quick learner
and is such a versatile player. She contributes so much to this team, whether
she is scoring or not, but I have been pleased to see that she has found her
rhythm, and has scored some very important game-winning goals for us.”
After no score from either team in 90
minutes of regulation on Sunday, Sept. 9, Verdoia put the ball in the net in
the 97th minute to lead the Redhawks on Gonzaga’s home field. This
was her second game-winning goal of the season, also scoring the game-winner in
Seattle U’s 1-0 victory versus Portland State on Sept. 2.
Verdoia also excels academically, as she
currently has a 3.967 cumulative GPA and is majoring in political science.
Seattle U continues their road stretch,
heading south to face Pac-12 powerhouses Oregon (Sept. 14) and Oregon State
(Sept. 16), this weekend. Both matches will be broadcast on the Pac-12 network.
The Redhawks will return home for their final non-conference match of the
season to host Utah Valley on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 12 noon.
The Seattle University athletics department names a Featured
Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in the classroom and in
competition.
