The Seattle University women’s soccer defense was impeccable for 89 minutes of play, but the first 61 seconds proved fatal as San Diego State scored two goals within this span of time. This proved to be the final margin, as the Redhawks fell, 2-0, on the Aztecs’ home field.
Each of San Diego State’s two goals was the result of corner kicks. At the :36 mark, Tiffany Hurst scored her first goal of the season with an assist by Hannah Keane on a corner kick.
About half a minute later, Sophie Metz took the corner kick, crossing the ball to Haley Locker, who scored the second goal of the contest on a header at the 1:01 mark.
Four Redhawks took shots, including Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec, Canada), Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.), Ava Ames (Seattle, Wash.), and Kelly Beck (Tacoma, Wash.). Beck led the team with two shots, one on goal. This was the first appearance of the season for Ames.
As a team, the Redhawks took five shots, two on goal, in comparison to the Aztecs’ 10 shots, with four on goal.
Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) got her third career start in goal for the Redhawks, playing all 90 minutes, and recording two saves.
The Redhawks (1-2-0) return home to Seattle to host the Eastern Washington Eagles on Sunday, Aug. 26, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. Gates open at 12 noon.
