SEATTLE (March 3) – The Seattle University women’s basketball team closes the regular season by hosting Utah Valley on Saturday, March 4. Tip-off for the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) finale is set for 4 p.m. at the Connolly Complex.
The Redhawks will honor six seniors before the contest, as Wilma Afunugo, Kaylee Best, Kaylee Biddell, Shaylin Heredia, Claire Metoyer, and Delanie Parry will play at the Connolly Complex for the final time.
SU (12-16, 9-4 WAC) can clinch the second seed in the WAC Tournament with a win Saturday. It can finish between second and fourth depending on results from other WAC games this weekend. The Redhawks dropped a pair of close matches last weekend, falling at the buzzer to UTRGV on Feb. 23 and then suffering a 64-61 setback to WAC regular season champion New Mexico State two days later.
Utah Valley (8-20, 3-10 WAC) can finish either fifth or sixth in the regular season standings. It lost, 64-45, to UTRGV in its final home game on Feb. 25. The Wolverines shot 25.8 percent from the field in the defeat.
On Feb. 4, Seattle U won, 69-51, at UVU. Alexis Montgomery led SU with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists, while Best contributed 15 points, 5 boards, and 4 assists. Taylor Gordon scored 15 points to lead three Wolverines in double figures.
Montgomery is the lone WAC player leading her team in scoring (16.1), rebounding (7.9), and assists (2.8) this season. Best is next with 13.5 points and a WAC-high 70 made three-pointers. The senior has 186 career treys, second-most in program history.
Gordon tops Utah Valley with 14.2 points per game. Marah Seals is putting up 12.9 points and 5.0 assists, while Sam Lubcke has averaged 12.1 points and 8.6 rebounds. Lubcke has missed each of the last three games for the Wolverines.
