Goals by Derek Rogalsky (Richland, Wash.) and Will Banchero (West Seattle, Wash.) just over a minute apart gave the Seattle University men's soccer team a 2-1 halftime lead, but three goals by the University of Portland in the second half allowed the Pilots to come away with a 4-2 victory Thursday night at Merlo Field.

In the final match of his collegiate career, Rogalsky earned his first goal by converting on a rebound off a shot by Banchero with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half. As the clock moved under eight minutes before halftime, Seattle University drew a corner kick, and Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) sent the ball into the box. Banchero was successful on a header from eight yards out for his first goal of the season to give the Redhawks the lead.

Portland (9-5-5) converted on its own corner kick less than eight minutes into the second half, as Jarad vanSchaik's pass found Ryan Luke, who converted on a shot into the lower left corner for his sixth goal of the season. vanSchaik would score the eventual game-winning goal, winning a one-on-one battle with SeattleU goalie Ivan Dizdar (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the 60th minute for his fifth tally of the season.

The Pilots added an insurance goal in the 81st minute, as vanSchaik picked up his second assist of the night, this time setting up Ryan Kawulok, whose attempt deflected off the left post into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Portland dominated the second half, attempting ten shots, five of them on goal, while allowing only two shots by the Redhawks.

Portland started the scoring almost 16 minutes into the contest, as Marc Tonkel fed Collen Warner, who blasted a shot from 30 yards out past Dizdar into the net to give the Pilots the early lead. SeattleU stuck right with Portland throughout the first half, as Ed Walugembe (Renton, Wash.) earned two shots and Troy Bratten (Troutdale, Ore.) sent a shot on goal that was stopped by Portland goalie Austin Guerrero.

Dizdar finished the night with seven saves for Seattle University, while Guerrero was credited with two saves for Portland. As has been the case during the majority of the season, SeattleU was short on available players, as Kyle Peterman (Boise, Idaho) and Ian Walsh (Novato, Calif.) were forced to sit out after receiving red cards in last Sunday's match against Cal State Bakersfield.

Seattle University finished a tough schedule with a 4-12-1 record, but earned a tie for fourth place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with a 3-4 league mark. Earlier in the day, it was announced that Morris and Walsh earned second team All-MPSF honors while Walugembe and Demaci Roussos (Sacramento, Calif.) received honorable mention recognition.

The Seattle University men's soccer team will lose Walsh, Rogalsky, Wesley VanHooser (Lake Stevens, Wash.), and Max Walker (Lake Tapps, Wash.) to graduation, but with 19 players from this year's roster eligible to come back next season, the squad will look to improve its position in the MPSF as it becomes eligible for NCAA postseason play in the 2010 campaign.
