Busque earned a spot on the team after participating in the team’s EXCELeration program on May 15-19, which was developed by the Canadian coaching staff to help players transition from the youth level to the full national team.
“We are excited for Mel and this amazing opportunity,” said Seattle U head coach Julie Woodward. “She has been playing really great and confident, and it is a well deserved call-up. It will be so cool to see Seattle U represented on the international stage.”
Busque made an immediate impact for the Sounders Women as she was named Player of the Match, scoring the first goal of the game, on Friday, Apr. 26 vs. her alma mater.
A St. Bruno, Quebec native, Busque has previously played with both the U-15 and U-17 Canadian Youth National Teams. This call-up to the full squad, however, is the beginning of an achieved dream.
“Every time I’m on the field or working out in the gym, that’s what I have in the back of my mind,” said Busque, “to one day represent my country by doing what I love the most.”
Canadian head coach John Herdman said of Busque, “[She] is a robust attacking player – and she has some trickery as well. She has shown at the EXCELeration level that she is capable of having an impact.”
