One school record fell Saturday as the Seattle University track and field team competed for the final time before heading to Arlington, Texas, for next week’s WAC Championships, participating in the Ken Shannon Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington at the new Husky Outdoor Track Facility.

Chris Scaffa (Lake Oswego, Ore.) broke the school record in the men’s discus throw with a mark of 43.57 meters (142’ 11”), finishing eighth in the event. Devon Walker (Ventura, Calif.), the previous record holder, finished 11th in the discus throw with a top effort of 38.38 meters (125’ 11”), plus he finished 10th in the shot put with a mark of 12.54 meters (41’ 1.75”) and 12th in the hammer throw at 39.59 meters (129’ 11”), behind Scaffa’s mark of 41.80 meters (137’ 2”) to end up in 10th place.

Dylan Burnett (Lynnwood, Wash.) finished second in the javelin throw with a top mark of 64.69 meters (212’ 3”), while Nick Bever (Seattle, Wash.) finished fifth in the triple jump with a best effort of 12.66 meters (41’ 6.5”). Shaddye Melu (Auburn, Wash.) cleared 2.01 meters (6’ 7”) to finish fifth in the high jump, and Stephen Squatrito (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished seventh in the pole vault after clearing 4.10 meters (13’ 5.25”).

For the women, Katie Tougas (Edmonds, Wash.) finished second in the long jump with a top leap of 5.43 meters (17’ 9.75”), with Valerie Wu (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) adding a 12th-place finish in the event at 4.68 meters (15’ 4.25”) to a 16th-place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.91 seconds. Amanda Maddux (Gresham, Ore.) finished 20th in the long jump at 4.27 meters (14’ 0.25”), tied for eighth in the high jump after clearing 1.44 meters (4’ 8.75”), and ninth in the shot put with a mark of 9.19 meters (30’ 2”).

Also in the throws, Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.) finished seventh in the javelin throw at 35.00 meters (114’ 10”) and eighth in the shot put with a mark of 9.93 meters (32’ 7”), and Sara Blakely (Spokane, Wash.) finished sixth in the discus throw with a top effort of 39.89 meters (130’ 10”). In the hammer throw held Friday evening, Bethany Richards (Shoreline, Wash.) finished in fifth place with a top effort of 45.02 meters (147’ 8”), while Renate Wescott (Puyallup, Wash.) finished in 10th place with a mark of 38.87 meters (127’ 6”).

On the track, the men’s 4x100 meter relay team of Zachary Schlachter (Tigard, Ore.), Eric Patterson-Floyd (Seattle, Wash.), Melu, and Austin Thummel-Gravitt (Puyallup, Wash.) finished second in 43.34 seconds. Samuel Engle (Portland, Ore.) finished second in his heat and 10th overall in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.67 seconds, and Adeyinka Bello (La Mesa, Calif.) was fifth in his heat and 11th overall in the 400 meter dash at 52.24 seconds.

In the distance events, Jeff Baklund (Auburn, Wash.) finished third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:27.91, followed by Kevin Kopetz (Derry, N.H.) in 11th place in 16:46.53. In the 1500 meter run, Gus Arroyo (Portland, Ore.) finished eighth with a time of 3:59.52, Nathan McLaughlin (Puyallup, Wash.) crossed the finish line in 15th place in 4:02.20, and Erik Barkhaus (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) concluded his preparations for the conference championships with a tempo run of 4:02.98, good enough for 16th place.

Rosalyn DiLillo (Santa Rosa, Calif.) competed in two track events Saturday, posting times of 28.41 seconds in the 200 meter dash and 2:26.86 in the 800 meter run, where Sophie Curatilo (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished sixth with a time of 2:15.59. In the women’s 1500 meter run, Becca Lassere (Boise, Idaho) finished in seventh place with a time of 4:50.04, followed by Amy Tolentino (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) in 14th place in 5:04.24 and Haley Kruell (Portland, Ore.) in 20th place in 5:22.80.

The Seattle University track and field team will compete in the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships next week, May 8-11, at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The decathlon and heptathlon will be held Wednesday and Thursday, May 8-9, followed by the rest of the championship events Friday and Saturday, May 10-11.
