Seattle University women’s rowing closed out their first season as an NCAA Division I varsity program at the Opening Day Regatta on the Montlake Cut in Seattle, Wash. The races were a prelude to the day’s main event, the Windermere Cup, which draws thousands of fans from all over the country and world.
"Wrapping up the season with opening day is a fun way to introduce our new team to the northwest rowing community," said interim head coach Jennifer Park. "We are very proud of how the women handled themselves today and look forward to their contributions to the Seattle U community in future seasons."
In the 20th race on the day, the novice 8+ finished second in the women’s freshmen 8+ race ahead of Washington’s “B” boat and behind Washington’s “A” boat.
In the 11th race of the day, the varsity 8+ competed in the women’s college open 8+, but was disqualified for interference.
The Seattle U women’s rowing team finishes a successful 2012-13 campaign, their first season as a DI varsity program, as the novice 8+ most recently won the petite finals and the varsity 8+ qualified for the grand finals at WIRAs (Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association) last weekend. The team will look to build upon their first-year success next season.
