Vancouver, Wash. -

The Seattle University men's tennis team saw plenty of court time Friday, losing 4-3 to Portland State and 0-6 to Portland in a Portland-area doubleheader.

The Redhawks began the day in Portland, Ore., with a match against the University of Portland Pilots. The Pilots dominated the match, winning all six singles contests. Will Topp (Olympia, Wash.) gave the Pilots' Ratan Gil a scare in the first set, forcing an extra game, but lost the set 7-5 then promptly fell in the second 6-1.

Both Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) also won six games in their match. At No. 2 singles, Lynch fell to Michel Hu Kwo 6-4, 6-2, while Clare lost to the Pilots' Jackson Martin 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.

The Pilots and Redhawks did not play any doubles matches since both teams would be playing in the afternoon as well.

After the Portland loss, SU traveled north to Vancouver, Wash., to take on Portland State. That dual was much more competitive as after dropping the doubles point, the Redhawks threatened a comeback in singles competition spurned on by the youngest members of the squad.

All three freshmen defeated their Vikings opponents in singles play Friday afternoon. Clare Took down Ian Risenhoover 6-4, 6-1 in the sixth singles position, while Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) also claimed a two-set victory, beating Lukas Kortus 7-6(7-5), 6-0.

At No. 2 singles, Topp faced Stratton Gilmore in a match that didn't seem to want to end. Gilmore took the first set in a tiebreak that ended 7-6(13-11), but Topp fought back to take the second 6-3. Topp again outlasted Gilmore in the third set super tiebreak 15-13 to claim the Redhawks' third and final point of the afternoon.

The Redhawks wrap up their brief trip to the Portland area Saturday, February 2nd with a 9:00 a.m. showdown with UC Davis. That match will take place in Portland, Ore.
