Undefeated in WAC, WBB Welcomes UT Arlington and LA Tech

This Week for the Redhawks: After finishing their first two-game conference road sweep last weekend, the Redhawks (8-6, 5-0 WAC) are still on top of the Western Athletic Conference as the only undefeated team in league play. On Jan. 10, they defeated New Mexico State in Las Cruces, 60-54, before defeating the University of Denver, 69-66, in Denver on Jan. 13. SU returns home this weekend to host UT Arlington (3-12, 1-4 WAC) on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. and Louisiana Tech (7-8, 3-2 WAC) on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.

Scouting UT Arlington: UT Arlington started off their conference schedule with a win at New Mexico State, 62-59, on Dec. 29, but have since fallen in four straight WAC contests. Three of their four losses have been  by seven points or less, with the exception of the Denver contest, 90-52, on Dec. 31. The Mavericks are led in scoring by Malaika Green, who averages 8.8 ppg, and led in rebounding by Aron Garcia, averaging 7.5 rpg. Garcia has also recorded a team-leading 18 blocks for UTA. Head coach Samantha Morrow is in her sixth season with the team with a 71-79 record.

Scouting Louisiana Tech: Louisiana Tech also started off WAC play this season with a win, at Denver, 82-77, in double OT on Dec. 29. They dropped the following contest at New Mexico State, 71-67, on Dec. 31, but finished up the week with another win vs. UT Arlington, 65-58. The Lady Techsters split last weekend with a win vs. Texas State, 71-58, on Jan. 10, and a loss vs. UTSA, 51-50, on Jan. 12. Kelia Shelton leads the team in scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg), and Brittany Lewis also averages in double scoring figures (10.7 ppg). Teresa Witherspoon, in her fifth season at the helm at her alma mater, boasts a 73-33 record at LA Tech.

This Week’s Promotions: (THURSDAY) The theme for this game is Hawaiian night featuring the Hui O’ Nani student group. They will hold a pregame meeting, will be selling baked goods as a fundraiser in the Connolly Center lobby, and are set to perform at halftime. (SATURDAY) The Seattle U Alumni Association will be hosting a pregame rally in the second floor Group Exercise Studio at the Eisiminger Fitness Center right next to the Connolly Center from 5:30-7 p.m. Rally admission is free with a game ticket, and guests will enjoy complimentary food. Saturday is also Dads & Daughters night, as dads can purchase tickets for just $7 and daughters get in free! Several members of the women’s basketball team will also be signing autographs at the Connolly Center North Court following the game. Saturday is also Military Discount Day, as all active and retired military receive free admission to the game, and accompanying friends and family can purchase tickets for $5 (adults) and $3 (youth). The first 50 students will also receive a Seattle U foam finger.

Student Incentive Program: For games during which school is in session, students in attendance will have the opportunity to win a prize worth $50 or more following the game (must be present to win). Students can enter the raffle when they pick up their free game ticket (with Student ID). At the end of the season, there will be a raffle for a grand prize, and students who have attended more games throughout the season will have a better chance to win. This week’s prizes are a $50 QFC gift card (Thursday) and a $50 Best Buy gift card (Saturday).
