The Seattle University women's swim team posted several season-best times Saturday as the second day of the 64th annual Husky Invitational, hosted by the Husky Swimming Foundation, took place at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
The morning started with Bethany Gehrke (Lynnwood, Wash.) posting a season-best time in the 400 individual medley, finishing 23rd in 4:34.20 to qualify for the "C" final. She finished third in her evening race with a time of 4:32.39, picking up 19th place overall. Also in the 400 IM preliminaries, Karla Ruff (Seattle, Wash.) finished in 49th place with a time of 4:39.75, and Mackenzie Gant (Richland, Wash.) also earned a season-best time in the event, finishing in 69th place in 4:45.27.
Kevlyn Richards (Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished in 11th place in the preliminaries of the 100 breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:04.49, but she decided to not swim in the evening finals. Dilynn D'Agostino (Gresham, Ore.) finished in 45th place in the morning with a season-best time of 1:07.12, followed by Caroline Van Maren (Bellevue, Wash.) in 74th place with a time of 1:09.05.
Melissa Randolf (Everett, Wash.) posted the best Seattle U time in the preliminaries of the 100 butterfly, finishing in 48th place with a time of 58.66 seconds, the best time by any Redhawk this season. Jane Liggett (Portland, Ore.) finished in 67th place with a time of 59.44 seconds, Van Maren finished in 142nd place with a mark of 1:02.68, and Megan Robinson (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted a time of 1:04.44 to land in 166th place.
Nicole Doi (Pleasanton, Calif.) posted a team-best mark in the 200 freestyle preliminaries at 1:58.50, finishing in 84th place overall. Ruff came in next in 1:59.72 for 104th place, followed by Allie McGavock (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) in 128th place in 2:00.89, Liggett in 130th place in 2:00.98, Gant in 159th place with a time of 2:02.74, Robinson with a time of 2:07.42, and Whitney Dean (Campbell, Calif.) with a mark of 2:08.44.
Rachel Leighter (Eugene, Ore.) finished in 99th place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.36, followed by Doi in 105th place with a time of 1:02.70. Leighter also led off Seattle U's 200 medley relay A team, joining with Richards, Randolf, and Doi for a time of 1:52.79, good enough for 35th place. The B team of Robinson, Van Maren, Liggett, and D'Agostino finished in 60th place with a mark of 1:57.49.
The evening concluded with Gehrke, Ruff, Leighter, and Doi combining for a time of 8:02.57 in the 800 freestyle relay to finish that event in 30th place. Right behind them in 31st place was the quartet of Richards, McGavock, Liggett, and Gant with a time of 8:02.63. Those are the sixth- and seventh-best times in the 800 free relay in program history.
The Seattle University women's swim team is scheduled to have representatives in the 1650 freestyle, the 200 backstroke, the 100 freestyle, the 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly, and the 400 freestyle relay Sunday. The preliminary session is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., with the finals set for 5:00 p.m.
